ELECTRONICS Words by Lawrence Schäffler T he NSS Evo2 series looks sharper and crisper than its predecessor and introduces a few features guaranteed to enhance your chances when hunter-gathering. The wide-screen Evo2 series is an upgrade of Simrad’s NSS platform – one of the marine industry’s touch-screen pioneers – and is available in four sizes: 7-inch, 9-inch, 12-inch and 16-inch. Its redesigned interface presents a new display system with rearranged icons to simplify the way you use the unit, offering faster, easier access to functions. It will be launched at this month’s Hutchwilco New Zealand Boat Show and the series will hit the shelves a month later. At face value, the Evo2’s major upgrade is its pinch-to-zoom feature: a rapid way to zoom in or out for more or less detail. Using this feature might test your dexterity in a lumpy sea, so there is a back-up alternative, a large scroll knob which delivers the same results. But the Evo2’s real goodies are inside. For a start, the units are equipped with a much faster processor so the response and refresh is quicker. The electronic smarts also provide networking with Simrad’s extensive range of radars, sonars and SonicHub audio, and they’re enabled for GoFree Wireless Wifi-1. More importantly, CHIRP and StructureScan are embedded in all four units. CHIRP, an acronym for Compressed High- Intensity Radiated Pulse, is a fancy name for fishing-orientated 80 Boating New Zealand May 2014 Interfacing Simrad’s Evo2 with the B&G H5000 delivers plenty of options. A BETTER VIEW oftheprey Dedicated fishos will relish the new range of chartplotters poised for release by Simrad. sonar technology. Conventional sonar uses a single frequency but this limits clarity and resolution. CHIRP uses multiple frequencies, ranging from low to high, to provide much clearer, high-resolution images. Unlike single-frequency sonar, it delivers these equally well in shallow or deep water. You need a CHIRP-compatible transducer to use this function. StructureScan delivers high-definition images of three- dimensional objects such as wrecks and rocky outcrops underwater which is useful when targeting prey. With the earlier NSS chartplotters, you had to buy StructureScan as an add-on. The units provide full autopilot integration, with a dedicated navigation screen for cruising, and are equipped with an HDMI video output, so if you want to share the Evo2’s view with your mates below, plug it into the TV.
