N ew motor launches from New Zealand builders are rare these days, so every one is notable. The North Cape 34 is a fine looking, American-inspired sportfisher from young Kerikeri boatbuilder and passionate game fisher Brad Rowe. Rowe is a Bay of Islands lad who grew up fishing and diving the waters of New Zealand’s gamefish capital with family, friends and professional gamefishers. Although a career as a game-fishing deckhand beckoned, he opted to follow his dream of designing and building boats. He approached designer Craig Loomes, who became a mentor. “When I asked him [Craig Loomes] how do you become a great boat designer, he told me to become a good boatbuilder first. So that’s what I did, taking up an apprenticeship with Auckland boat builders Parson and Way,” says Rowe. Designed and built by Bluefix Boatworks in Kerikeri, Bay of Islands, the clean-lined North Cape 34 walks the line between hardcore gamefisher and family cruiser.
