In a nationwide initiative led by Yachting New Zealand, the Volvo National Sailing & Boating Day is aimed at encouraging newcomers and perhaps some old- comers to get down to the local club to meet some members and see what’s on offer for them. Clubs nationwide are the hub to a wide range of water-based activities, depending on the nature of the local lake, river or coastline. Clubs often offer junior, adult, family and other forms of membership and cater for competitive and recreational water-sports including dinghies, keelboats, multihulls, launches, trailer yachts, small powerboats, paddlers, windsurfers and kite boarders. Yachting New Zealand chief Executive, David Abercrombie explains the impetus behind the initiative: “The Volvo National Sailing Boating Day is a day for clubs and their members to showcase and profile why we’re passionate about sailing and boating, and for the public to learn more. We want them to catch the boating bug’” To see whats available in your area, check out www.yachtingnz.org.nz/16Feb ONCE AGAIN, St Arnaud in the Nelson Lakes National Park will play host to some of the most beautiful boats in New Zealand at the Antiques and Classic Boat Show from February 8-9. The shores of Lake Rotoiti will be lined with the usual range of vessels, from old race boats, to jet boats from the 60s, clinkers and veteran wooden yachts. Now in its 16th year, the event’s number and quality of entries continues to grow. Judging will take place on Saturday, ahead of an evening awards ceremony to be held at the Alpine Lodge. The dates of event also tie in nicely with the Taste Marlborough and a Canterbury Crusaders game in Motueka, so the weekend’s entertainment isn’t restricted to the water. www.nzclassicboats.com OLDIES ARE GOODIES Boating _on watch_Feb14.indd 13 21/01/2014 10:53:49 a.m.
