THE ARATERE, A KIWIRAIL-owned interisland ferry, brought transport between the North and South Islands to a grinding halt when it suffered a broken propeller on November 5, 2013. It has since been sent to Keppel Yard in Singapore, where it is having an extensive repair and refit, reportedly costing $30 million. New Zealand company, Henleys Propellers and Marine, has supplied the Thordon SXL material for the construction of a custom new bearing for the ship’s rudder. SXL is a high strength, elastomeric polymer developed by Thordon Bearings for a special bearing system that supports the rudder weight, while allowing the rudder stock to turn freely while accommodating for rudder stock deflection. Thordon has also developed a new, high performance rudder stock seal to complement the above and below-waterline bearing package. This is a new show sales record for Bavaria and perhaps the largest of the 1600 exhibitors at the show. Bavaria presented its ranges of power and sail models, showcasing its recently redeveloped Cruiser and Vision ranges. Constantin von Bülow, CEO of Bavaria, said the quality and design of the yachts were the most commonly mentioned purchase reasons from their customers. “We have invested a lot of time and money in these subjects because we are convinced that customers are not deceived today just by smart chic lines in the design during their purchase decision, but spend more time looking exactly at all the details of a yacht.” Christine Bird, sales manager for Busfield Marine Brokers, the NZ dealers for Bavaria sail and motorboats, visited the show in Dusseldorf and was impressed with the range available. “W ith a new Vision 42 and a Cruiser 41 on the way, plus the Cruiser 56 and 33s that are already here, prospective purchasers will soon be able to see a good selection of what Bavaria has to offer, here in New Zealand.” Busfield Marine 09 302 1220 www.busfieldmarine.co.nz Bavaria’s New Sales Record NAVICO HOLDING AS, parent company to the Lowrance, Simrad and B&G brands, has added Contour Innovations to its inventory.
