thanks to having little rocker in the hull to lift the bow once she hits the plane. This does give her a tendency to ship a lot of white water once the speedo clicks into the late teens. Mike Sanderson, winner of the Volvo Ocean Race and NZ Yachtsman of the Year, has recently been sailing with Menace and is hugely impressed with the boat. “It’s a terrific boat,” he says. “It’s a lot better than I was expecting, actually. At first I was a bit concerned that it was too flat across the back and there’s not a huge amount of volume in the bow. But it goes really, really well.” Boats with flat aft sections generally suffer in lighter airs because when they are unable to heel appreciably, they have a lot of wetted surface area to drag through the water, but the MC38 escapes this handicap. “She does get a bit nosey in the puffs,” says Sanderson, “but I think that’s fine and they were possibly even designed like that because it definitely keeps it pretty exciting.” Downwind, Menace is nimble and fast, and while she might dig her nose in slightly as a gust hits, once powered up and planing, her clear- coated carbon hull skips easily across the surface of the water. When sailing upwind, she responds well to tuning and rewards synchronicity between TOP FROM LEFT: The open style cockpit gives the crew a lot of room to move around and set up the boat with ease. With no pedestal, the sails are hoisted from the primary winches. The MC38 surges downwind, staying ahead of much bigger boats. She is kitted out with a square-top Stratis mainsail from Doyle Sails.
