Small fish come to hand in a lively state and flap around a lot. Hold them gently but firmly to remove the hook and slip them back into the water as soon as possible. Always keep air time to a minimum. The sooner a fish is unhooked and released, the better its chance of survival. If you must lift a fish clear of the water for a photo, get organised first. Keep the fish in the net in the water until you are ready and remember to handle it with wet hands, gloves or a rag/towel. Be quick about the photos and return the fish to the water inside 30 seconds. Revive large snapper in the water by holding them upright until they swim off of their own accord. This can take several minutes when the fish is tired. Snapper taken from deep water may not survive release. If the swim bladder has ruptured or the fish is so blown it can’t swim back down, it’s likely to die. If most of the fish you are catching in deep water are undersized, move to another spot. A few weeks ago, this snapper would have been legal size but under the new rules it must be returned to the water. If in doubt, measure carefully. Snapper in SNA 1 must be 30cm from the tip of the nose to the V of the tail, not the tip. When releasing larger snapper, take the time to revive them in the water until they swim away of their own accord.
