A big, big bummer. We had a sunny, clear water ride down to Kaiteriteri where we met the road crew for lunch before blatting across the bay to Nelson. Coastguard met us outside The Cut and led us in: 25 PWCs abreast, surging and swirling in our bow waves. Twice, Pearl’s 1.8-litre engine revved high as the jet sucked froth rather than water. We were all grinning because it was so much fun. Well, I was; you couldn’t really tell behind our helmets. As Team Pearl, I was travelling with my roadie gal pals, Elizabeth Meadows and Julie Sarten. That afternoon, mindful of Ben’s advice and with aching neck and shoulders, I had a snooze and drank lots of water. Elizabeth gave me a treatment of jin shin jyutsu, best described as acupuncture without the needles. As the week continued, I felt better and better. Wednesday was the leg from Nelson to French Pass.
